Quick answer: Children 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every year. Kids ages 6 months to 8 years who are getting a flu vaccine for the first time, or who have had only one dose before, need 2 doses at least 4 weeks apart. The best time is September or October. Flu shots are safe for kids, and side effects are usually mild, like a sore arm or low fever.

Children get the flu at higher rates than adults and spread it quickly at school and daycare. Children under 5, and especially under 2, are more likely to have serious complications. Here’s what parents need to know.

What age can a child get a flu shot?

From 6 months. Babies younger than 6 months are too young for the vaccine, so the best way to protect them is for everyone around them, and their mother during pregnancy, to get vaccinated.

Does my child need one dose or two?

Child’s age and history Doses this season
6 months to 8 years, never had a flu vaccine or only 1 dose ever 2 doses, at least 4 weeks apart
6 months to 8 years, had 2 or more doses in the past 1 dose
9 years and older 1 dose

If your child needs 2 doses, start early so they’re fully protected before flu peaks in December.

Shot or nasal spray?

The nasal spray vaccine is an option for healthy children 2 years and older. It isn’t recommended for children with a weakened immune system, or for kids ages 2 to 4 with asthma or recent wheezing. Your provider will help you choose.

If your child already has flu symptoms

Sudden fever, cough, body aches and unusual tiredness in a child can mean flu. Children under 5 and kids with asthma should be seen quickly. Read flu in kids: when to go to urgent care and fever in children. Our pediatric urgent care team can test and treat the same day.
